The 50,000 km High-Speed Rail Milestone.
As of early 2026, China’s high-speed rail (HSR) network has surpassed 50,000 kilometers in total length more than the rest of the world’s high-speed lines combined. The focus has shifted from primary coastal routes to the 8+8 national grid, connecting deeper into the western regions. New lines in Sichuan and Chongqing recently opened, cutting travel times through some of the country’s most rugged terrain by half. Following the 2025 unveiling of the world’s fastest commercial maglev prototype, 2026 marks the beginning of intensive real-world condition testing on a dedicated track in Qingdao. This system aims to bridge the speed gap between conventional rail and air travel. Domestic rail travel hit a record 4.26 billion passenger trips last year, and the state railway group is targeting a further 3.5% increase in 2026 through enhanced automation and digital ticketing.
