China has moved beyond solar and wind dominance to become the global leader in alkaline electrolyzer manufacturing the technology used to create green hydrogen. Recent 2026 industry reports confirm that China now accounts for roughly 86% of global manufacturing capacity for alkaline electrolyzers, significantly driving down the global cost of hydrogen production. The government’s 2026–2030 energy strategy has prioritized regional self-sufficiency, aiming to replace coal-based industrial processes with green hydrogen in provinces like Inner Mongolia. New facilities, such as the AI-enabled green ammonia plant in Chifeng, are now operational. These plants use off-grid wind power to create carbon-neutral fuel, providing a blueprint for heavy industry decarbonization.
