China’s lunar ambitions are shifting into high gear with the scheduled 2026 uncrewed test flight of Mengzhou-1 meaning Dream Vessel. This is the nation’s next-generation crewed spacecraft, specifically designed to carry astronauts to the lunar surface. Alongside this, the Chang’e-7 mission is slated for launch later this year. It will target the moon’s south pole to search for water ice and test flying mini-probes that can hop into permanently shadowed craters. These missions are critical stepping stones for the planned establishment of a permanent international lunar research station.
