Expansion of the New World Screwworm Outbreak.

Mexico is currently battling a significant public health and agricultural crisis as the New World Screwworm (NWS) continues its northward spread. As of January 20, 2026, the outbreak has reached the northern state of Tamaulipas. Nationally, Mexico has confirmed 122 human cases of screwworm myiasis across seven states, including Chiapas, Yucatán, and Veracruz. There are currently over 850 active animal cases in livestock. The most affected state in the south is Oaxaca, with 188 active cases. The Mexican government, via SENASICA, is utilizing the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT)—releasing millions of sterile male flies to break the reproduction cycle—alongside strict animal movement controls to contain the spread.
