A Super-Colony of Monarch Butterflies.
Environmentalists in Michoacán are reporting one of the most vibrant winter migrations in recent years. Due to favorable wind patterns and a successful pollinator corridor initiative, the monarch butterfly sanctuaries are seeing a massive super-colony effect this January. Locals and tourists are reporting orange blizzards where the sheer volume of butterflies is so high that the sound of their wings beating can actually be heard in the quiet of the Oyamel fir forests. It’s a rare piece of purely positive nature news, and peak viewing season is happening right now late January through February.
