Germany Lifts Systematic Passport Checks.
Commuters and businesses in northern Switzerland woke up to the welcome news that Germany has officially lifted systematic passport checks at the land border as of midnight. After a six-month period of temporary internal controls introduced in September 2025, the 362-kilometer border has returned to its status as an open Schengen crossing. The move is expected to eliminate wait times of up to 45 minutes for the 60,000 daily commuters and logistics firms moving goods between Basel, Zurich, and the Rhine-Ruhr corridor in Germany.
