Wood-First Urban Expansion in Skellefteå.

Building on the success of the Sara Cultural Centre, the city of Skellefteå has officially opened the world’s first entire residential district built almost exclusively from cross-laminated timber (CLT). In 2026, this Wooden City initiative has proven that high-rise timber construction can sequester more carbon than it produces. The project is now being exported as a global blueprint for sustainable urban density, showing that fire-safe, multi-story wooden structures can replace carbon-heavy concrete and steel in cold-climate regions.
