Sapporo Snow Festival & Record Snowfall.

The world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival officially entered its second day today, but it’s unfolding against a backdrop of extreme weather. Over two million visitors are expected in Hokkaido to see massive snow sculptures of landmarks and anime characters. Ironically, too much snow has become a danger. Aomori and other northern regions recorded their highest snow accumulation in 40 years. The government has deployed the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) to help elderly residents clear rooftops and prevent collapses in what is being called a life-threatening winter event.
