Private Space Mission Ends In Mid-Air Explosion.
Japan's ambitions to become a major player in the private space sector faced a significant setback this morning. The Kairos No. 3 rocket, operated by the Tokyo-based startup Space One, self-destructed just 69 seconds after liftoff from Spaceport Kii in Wakayama Prefecture. The 18-meter solid-fuel rocket was carrying five experimental satellites, including hardware for the Taiwan Space Agency. This marks the third consecutive failure for the Kairos program. While the mission was terminated by an autonomous safety system, the company remains committed to its goal of providing low-cost, frequent satellite launch services.
