Double-Digit Fee Hikes In Kyoto And Himeji.

To combat overtourism and fund the massive costs of heritage conservation, major Japanese landmarks are implementing aggressive new pricing structures as of March 2026. The city has introduced a five-tier lodging tax. While budget stays remain cheap, guests at luxury hotels now face a tax of up to ¥10,000 per night, the highest in Japan. The iconic White Heron castle has more than doubled its admission fees for international visitors. The revenue is being funneled directly into long-term seismic retrofitting and timber restoration to ensure the 400-year-old structure survives future natural disasters.
