M6.5 Earthquake Hits Off.
A powerful magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Honshu today at 2:18 PM local time. The epicenter was located approximately 122 kilometers (76 miles) east of Yamada at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers. While the shaking was felt by over 1.5 million people across the region, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed no tsunami warning was necessary. Early reports indicate low likelihood of major casualties or damage, as structures in the area are built to high seismic standards.
