China Ties in Diplomatic Shift.
In a move signaling a cooler relationship with its neighbor, Tokyo is set to downgrade its description of China in the 2026 Diplomatic Bluebook. Under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Japan will remove the long-standing phrase describing Beijing as one of its most important partners, instead labeling China simply as an important neighbor. This recalibration follows a year of heightened tension over trade, maritime security, and Takaichi’s recent outreach to Washington to diversify supply chains away from Chinese-controlled rare earth minerals.
