M6.1 Earthquake Hits Volcano Islands.

Seismologists recorded a strong and shallow 6.1 magnitude earthquake today in the Volcano Islands region south of the Japanese mainland. While the USGS issued a "Green alert" (indicating a low likelihood of casualties or major damage) and confirmed there is no tsunami threat, the event has kept emergency services on high alert. This follows a period of heightened seismic monitoring across the archipelago earlier this month.
