Martian Dream Is The MMX Mission.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is preparing for its most ambitious deep-space mission to date: the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX). Scheduled for launch in late 2026, the mission aims to solve a long-standing mystery regarding the origins of the Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos. The spacecraft will attempt to land on Phobos to collect at least 10 grams of regolith. This material is expected to be returned to Earth in the early 2030s. Scientists hope to determine whether these moons are captured asteroids or the result of a massive impact between Mars and another celestial body. Despite a setback with a navigation satellite launch in December 2025, JAXA is moving forward with the H3 flagship rocket for the MMX mission, viewing it as the cornerstone of their future commercial and scientific space travel.
