Kilauea Volcano Erupts From The Ground.
While the state deals with water from the sky, the Big Island is dealing with fire from the ground. Kīlauea volcano erupted on marking its 43rd eruptive episode. Fountains of lava reached heights of 1,000 feet, creating a spectacular but hazardous display. The eruption produced significant amounts of tephra (volcanic glass and ash), which blanketed nearby communities and forced the temporary closure of Highway 11 and sections of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
