The Roman Village of the Gobi Desert.
In the remote village of Liqian, located in Gansu province, a long-standing historical mystery is trending again this week. For decades, historians have been puzzled by the villagers here: many of them have green eyes, fair hair, and aquiline noses, features that are very rare in rural China. The local legend which has some scientific backing suggests that the villagers are the descendants of a lost Roman legion that vanished in 36 BC. DNA testing has indeed shown that many locals have nearly 50% Caucasian ancestry. Today, the village has fully embraced this East-meets-West identity. As of February 2026, it’s become a major site for ancestry tourism. It’s a fascinating reminder that even in the most isolated corners, the world has been interconnected for thousands of years.
