Adoption Of The New Ethnic Unity Law.
China’s national legislature officially adopted the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law. This sweeping new legislation codifies the government's push for a shared spiritual home and national identity among the country’s ethnic minority groups. A key provision of the law mandates Mandarin Chinese as the primary language of instruction from pre-kindergarten through high school nationwide. While officials state the law is designed to foster community and prevent domestic friction, critics argue it will further accelerate the assimilation of minority cultures in regions like Tibet, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia by limiting the use of native languages in public life.
