UN Torture Prevention Body Returns to Mexico.

The United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) has announced its official return to Mexico, with a mission scheduled from January 25 to 30, 2026. This is the SPT’s third visit to the country. Experts will conduct unannounced inspections of prisons and detention centers to evaluate if Mexico has implemented prior recommendations to curb abuse and strengthen legal safeguards for detainees. The visit was delayed from 2025 due to UN budget constraints. It comes at a critical time as the Mexican government faces international pressure to reform its judicial and penal systems.
