The World Cup Effect On Mexico City Workers.
As Mexico City prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, local advocacy groups are raising alarms about the social cleansing occurring in historically working-class neighborhoods. Massive infrastructure projects, including the renovation of the iconic Azteca Stadium and new bike lanes, have inadvertently slashed the earnings of street vendors and local workers. Mayor Clara Brugada has proposed fair play zones to allow vendors to continue their trade during the tournament, but local collectives argue that the rapid gentrification and station closures are pricing out the very people who make the city's culture world-famous.
