Tensions Escalate Between Mexico and China.

Economic relations between Mexico City and Beijing reached a friction point this week. After Mexico imposed tariffs on over 1,400 Chinese products earlier this year to protect domestic industries like footwear and steel, China’s Ministry of Commerce officially declared it has the right to retaliate. Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard maintains that these duties—some reaching 50%—are necessary for domestic protection, even as analysts suggest they are a strategic move ahead of the 2026 USMCA review.
