Prehistoric Secrets Unearthed in the Yucatán.

Underwater archaeologists from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History have recently confirmed the discovery of an 8,000-year-old human skeleton deep within a flooded cave system near Tulum. Found 26 feet below the surface, the remains date back to a time when these caves were dry, before rising sea levels flooded the peninsula at the end of the last Ice Age.This is the 11th such skeleton found in the region. Researchers believe the placement suggests a deliberate ritual burial, offering rare insights into the funerary practices of the earliest inhabitants of the Americas. This discovery has accelerated a federal initiative to designate the underground river network as a protected heritage area by the end of 2026.
