Mexico City’s Day Zero Stays At Bay.
Despite lingering fears of a total water shutdown, the National Water Commission (Conagua) reported in early March 2026 that the Cutzamala Reservoir System has stabilized at 56% capacity. This is a significant improvement from the record lows of 34% seen two years ago, thanks to managed extraction and improved leak repairs. However, the system is still below its historical average of 70%+. To combat this, the city government is currently inaugurating localized water purification plants in the Iztapalapa and Xochimilco boroughs to provide subsidized water to low-income residents who still face daily shortages.
