Electoral Reform Plans A Plan B After A Loss.
In a rare political defeat for the administration, President Claudia Sheinbaum’s proposed electoral reform bill was rejected by the Chamber of Deputies. The bill aimed to reduce the size of the Senate and change the way proportional-representation deputies are elected. The proposal failed after two of the ruling party’s long-time allies the Labor Party and the Green Party withdrew their support, citing concerns that the changes would diminish the influence of smaller parties. In response, the President announced a "Plan B" during her Thursday morning press conference, which will focus on reducing spending in local legislatures and increasing the use of public referendums.
