Vertical Alpine Forest Initiative.

To combat the receding treeline and loss of biodiversity caused by warming mountain temperatures, the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) has launched the Vertical Forest project in 2026. This initiative uses drone-assisted precision planting to establish migration corridors for native flora and fauna across steep Alpine slopes. By planting climate-resilient varieties of larch and stone pine in strategically mapped micro-climates, Switzerland is attempting to ensure that its mountain ecosystems can climb higher into the peaks as the lower valleys become too warm for traditional Alpine species.
