The Swedish Government has formally progressed a legislative proposal to Parliament that significantly raises the bar for obtaining citizenship, with most changes slated for June 2026. The proposal includes increasing the residency requirement from five to eight years, a new self-sufficiency financial requirement (approx. 20,000 SEK/month), and mandatory Swedish language and civics exams. The reforms aim to strengthen the status of Swedish citizenship and encourage better integration into society.
