Climate Policy Council Issues.
Sweden’s independent Climate Policy Council released its annual report on March 19, 2026, delivering a harsh critique of the current government’s environmental trajectory. The Council stated that Sweden is now further from its 2030 and 2040 climate targets than ever before. It specifically blamed decisions to cut petrol taxes and reduce biofuel blending requirements for slowing the country's electrification. Adding to the environmental debate, a landmark study published the same day found that Sweden's old-growth boreal forests store up to 83% more carbon than the industrial plantations replacing them. Scientists warned that soil carbon loss from industrial logging is persistent and shocking, calling for urgent protection of primary forests.
