Carbon Discovery In Swedish Forests.
A major study published today in the journal Science reveals that Sweden’s undisturbed primary forests store significantly more carbon than previously estimated roughly 83% more per acre than the industrial tree plantations replacing them. Researchers from Lund and Stanford University found that the vast majority of this carbon is locked in the soil rather than the trees themselves. The findings suggest that protecting old-growth forests is far more effective for climate mitigation than industrial logging and replanting, as soil carbon lost during logging is persistent and shocking and cannot be easily recovered.
