Whisky-nomics And The End Of The Beer Era.
A significant cultural shift is occurring in South Korea's beverage market. For the first time in the history of the country's largest supermarket chain, E-Mart, whisky sales have surpassed domestic beer. Driven primarily by Gen Z and Millennials, the highball culture mixing whisky with soda and fruit has moved the spirit from a special occasion luxury to a daily staple. In late 2025, whisky accounted for 24.2% of total alcohol sales at major retailers, edging out domestic beer at 23.8%. Analysts suggest this trend is a byproduct of the Home-sul (drinking at home) movement, where younger consumers prioritize higher-quality, diverse flavors over the traditional Nomikai (corporate drinking) culture of bulk-consuming beer and soju.
