Market Volatility and New Tariffs.
South Korea’s financial markets have faced a roller-coaster week. On February 2, the Kospi index experienced a sharp Black Monday crash, dipping below 5,000 before rebounding 5% the following day. This volatility is tied to global uncertainty over U.S. Federal Reserve appointments and a looming trade dispute with the United States. Recently announced a hike in tariffs on South Korean goods to 25%, citing dissatisfaction with current trade agreements. The South Korean government, led by President Lee Jae Myung, is currently in emergency talks to shield local firms from the impact of these trade barriers.
