Landmark Murder Conviction Over Late-Term Abortion.
The Seoul Central District Court issued a significant ruling today that has reignited a national debate over the "legislative vacuum" surrounding reproductive rights in South Korea. A hospital director and an operating surgeon were sentenced to six and four years in prison, respectively, for performing an abortion at 36 weeks. The court found them guilty of murder, noting that the newborn was delivered via cesarean section before being killed. While the 26-year-old mother was found guilty of attempted murder, her three-year sentence was suspended. The ruling has drawn sharp criticism from human rights groups like Amnesty International, who argue the lack of clear parliamentary regulation since the 2019 decriminalization of abortion continues to place medical providers and patients in "impossible positions."
