The ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) officially expelled Kim Hee-soo, the governor of Jindo County, following a wave of public and diplomatic backlash. The controversy stemmed from Kim’s recent suggestion that the local government should import young, unmarried women from countries like Sri Lanka or Vietnam to address the region's declining birth rate and aging population. The remarks were condemned as dehumanizing by Vietnamese diplomats and civic groups. South Jeolla Province issued a formal apology today, and the DPK stripped Kim of his membership, citing a violation of the party’s values regarding human rights and multiculturalism.
