A Surprising Rebound In The Birth Rate.
For the second consecutive year, South Korea has reported a rise in its fertility rate, providing a glimmer of hope for a country long defined by a demographic crisis. Preliminary data from February 2026 shows the total fertility rate rose to 0.80, up from 0.75 in 2024. This follows a record-low of 0.72 in 2023. Experts attribute the rebound to a massive surge in marriages (up 14.8% in late 2024), partly driven by a post-pandemic shift in social attitudes and aggressive government housing support for newlyweds. While the population is still shrinking overall, the 2026-2030 5th Basic Plan is moving away from simply boosting births toward improving the general quality of life and de-Seoulization to lower the cost of living.
