Shift To Coal To Combat.
In a temporary departure from long-term green energy goals, Energy Secretary Sharon Garin announced on March 24 that the Philippines will maximize the output of its coal-fired power plants. With the cost of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) becoming prohibitive, the government aims to lean on coal—which already provides 60% of the country’s power—to prevent massive hikes in consumer electricity bills. While the move is criticized by environmental groups, the administration maintains it is a necessary lifeline to keep the economy afloat during the global energy shock.
