The Village of the 300 Scared Crows.
In the deep valleys of Tokushima, there is a village where the human population has been almost entirely replaced by scarecrow residents. Known as Nagoro, this tiny hamlet features hundreds of life-sized dolls positioned in lifelike poses: waiting for a bus, working in fields, or sitting in a defunct classroom. Originally started by a local artist to replace neighbors who had moved away or passed on, the Scarecrow Village has become a surreal open-air gallery. Visitors can wander through the quiet streets and find themselves outnumbered 10-to-1 by these silent, unblinking residents, each with their own name and backstory recorded in a village registry. It is a hauntingly beautiful tribute to rural life and one of the most photographed "ghost towns" in the world.
