The Return Of Kashiwazaki-Kariwa.
In a landmark move for Japan’s energy security, Unit 6 of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station one of the world's largest plants was successfully restarted in February 2026. This marks a decisive shift away from the post-Fukushima nuclear-free sentiment as the country seeks to lower its reliance on expensive imported fossil fuels. The restart of just this one reactor is expected to displace roughly 1.3 million tons of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) imports annually, significantly lowering the nation's energy trade deficit. Under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the government has accelerated the goal of having nuclear power provide 20% of Japan’s electricity by 2040. With 15 reactors now back in operation across the country, Japan is attempting to stabilize electricity costs that have been a primary driver of domestic inflation over the last two years.
