Sober Turn And The Rise Of Oshikatsu.

Social life in Japan is undergoing a quiet revolution as younger generations move away from the corporate-mandated Nomikai (drinking party) culture and toward more individualized, hobby-focused lifestyles. Nearly half of young people now report opting out of alcohol entirely. In response, Night Cafes and alcohol-free mocktail bars are replacing traditional Izakayas as the primary third-spaces for Gen Z. The practice of Oshikatsu (devotedly supporting a specific idol, character, or creator) has moved from the otaku fringe to the mainstream. It is now common to list one’s Oshi on professional resumes and dating profiles as a primary marker of identity. Despite the high-tech image, 2026 has seen a massive boom in Showa Retro a longing for the 1920s–1980s aesthetic. This is manifesting in a resurgence of physical sticker collecting and analog hobbies that provide a respite from an increasingly AI-saturated digital life.
