Space Exploration Mixed Results for Orbital Ambitions.
The first quarter of 2026 has been a period of intense activity and technical hurdles for Japan’s aerospace sector, as both the public and private sectors push for satellite-launching autonomy. On March 5, 2026, the Tokyo-based startup Space One saw its third attempt to reach orbit end in failure. The Kairos rocket spiraled shortly after liftoff from the Kii Spaceport, triggering an automatic flight termination. Despite the private sector's struggles, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully completed the primary mission of the HTV-X1 cargo craft, which departed from the International Space Station in February after a successful resupply mission. JAXA is currently preparing for the 9th launch of its flagship H3 rocket, scheduled to carry the Michibiki No. 7 navigation satellite later this year, as it seeks to recover from an engine-related failure in late 2025.
