Noto Peninsula Recovery.
As of January 2026, Japan is grappling with a sobering reality on the second anniversary of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake which occurred Jan 1, 2024. This milestone has become a flashpoint for a broader national conversation about Japan’s shrinking population and the future of its rural regions. Despite two years of reconstruction efforts, over 18,000 people remain in temporary housing. The road to reconstruction has hit a major wall: a severe shortage of labor. Recent reports show that nearly 70% of construction firms are now turning down large-scale projects because they simply do not have the workers to finish them.
