Content Piracy Hits Record 10.4 Trillion Yen.
A new government report released today by Japan's industry ministry reveals that online piracy and counterfeit goods related to Japanese anime, games, and music caused an estimated 10.4 trillion yen in damages globally in 2025. Digital piracy alone tripled compared to 2022 levels, driven by illegal uploads of popular franchises like Demon Slayer. This surge in copyright infringement presents a major hurdle for the government’s goal of nearly quadrupling overseas content sales to 20 trillion yen by 2033.
