Nara’s 1,250-Year-Old Fire And Water Ritual
Away from the tech world, the city of Nara is currently in the middle of one of Japan’s oldest and most spectacular traditions: the Omizutori ceremony at Todaiji Temple (March 1–14). Every evening this week, giant flaming torches are carried along the balcony of the Nigatsudo Hall, showering the crowds below with sparks. Local legend says these sparks provide protection and purification for the coming spring. This ritual has been performed without fail for over 1,200 years. For locals, the end of the Omizutori ceremony is the true signal that the winter cold has passed and the cherry blossom season is officially around the corner.
