The Japanese government finalized plans for a major administrative shift set for this June. The current Residence Card for foreign nationals and the My Number (Social Security and Tax) card will be consolidated into a single Specified Residence Card. Unlike current IDs, the new card will not display visa types or expiration dates on its surface; instead, this data will be stored strictly in an embedded chip to enhance privacy and security. This integration is part of a broader Digital Agency push to allow residents to handle bank accounts, health insurance, and immigration renewals with a single tap, reducing the infamous Japanese paperwork mountain.
