Historic Digital Nomad Visa Sees Surge in Early 2026 Applicants.
Japan’s Immigration Services Agency has reported a record number of applications for its specialized "Digital Nomad" visa, which was expanded earlier this year to include more eligible regions and flexible stay requirements. The program allows remote workers to reside in Japan for up to six months, provided they meet specific income thresholds and health insurance criteria. The surge is largely attributed to a new "Work-from-Japan" initiative launched by local governments in rural prefectures like Nagano and Hokkaido. These regions are offering subsidized co-working spaces and cultural immersion programs to attract international talent, hoping to revitalize local economies and offset the effects of domestic population decline.
