Final Sunset For 3G Flip Phones.
A cultural and technological era officially ends today as NTT Docomo completes the shutdown of its 3G wireless network. This marks the final blackout for the iconic, high-tech flip phones (gara-kei) that defined Japanese mobile culture for decades. While 4G and 5G are now the standard, the shutdown has forced a massive migration for the millions of elderly users and digital minimalists who had clung to the devices. Curiously, as the old tech fades, Japanese collectibles are hitting new peaks: a Pikachu Illustrator card was just confirmed as the most expensive trading card in history.
