AI Meets Ancient Heritage.

As Japan faces demographic shifts and labor shortages, the Agency for Cultural Affairs is turning to technology to preserve its historic sites. A new initiative integrates AI-enabled deterioration detection and digital twin technology to monitor and maintain thousands of undesignated cultural assets across rural prefectures. Recent amendments to the Act on Protection of Cultural Properties allow 45 prefectures to link heritage preservation directly with local economic development and tourism. Digital archiving projects are currently being used to safeguard dispersed assets in Fukushima, ensuring that traditional festivals and crafts are preserved even as populations shift.
