30 by 30 Biodiversity Goal.

The Ministry of the Environment has launched a significant push toward its 30 by 30 target, which aims to protect at least 30% of Japan’s land and sea by 2030. A key component of this plan is the Nature Coexistence Sites initiative, which certifies private and community-managed lands such as traditional Satoyama woodlands as official biodiversity conservation areas. New regulations starting in April 2026 will mandate design for recycling for PET bottles and stationery to reduce industrial waste. The 2026 draft budget includes record allocations for perovskite solar cells and offshore wind farm expansion in Japan's exclusive economic zones.
