Abe’s Killer Appeals Life Sentence.

Legal proceedings for one of Japan’s most notorious crimes reached a milestone this week. Tetsuya Yamagami, the man convicted of assassinating former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022, has officially appealed his life sentence as of February 4. Yamagami was found guilty two weeks ago in Nara District Court. His defense team argued for leniency, citing the psychological toll of his mother’s bankruptcy caused by the Unification Church. The appeal ensures that the uncomfortable discussion regarding the ties between the LDP and the Unification Church will remain in the public eye, even as the country attempts to move past the tragedy.
