The Green Fee Begins Hawaii’s New Climate Tax.

A major shift in Hawaii’s tourism and environmental policy took effect earlier this year. As highlighted in Governor Josh Green’s 2026 State of the State Address, Hawaii has implemented the nation’s first Green Fee. A 0.75% tax is now added to all lodging bills (hotels and vacation rentals) across the islands. The initiative aims to generate over $100 million annually. These funds are legally mandated for climate resilience, coral reef restoration, forest regeneration, and maintaining public trails and beaches. This move is part of a broader Paradigm Shift in urban planning that prioritizes managed retreat—relocating infrastructure inland away from eroding coastlines—rather than building traditional concrete seawalls.
