Oʻahu Electric Bills Set To Rise.
The State Public Utilities Commission (PUC) officially approved a proposal by Hawaiian Electric (HECO) yesterday to modernize the Waiau Power Plant in Pearl City. While the project aims to stabilize the grid, it comes with a cost for residents. HECO will replace six aging oil-burning turbines with new units capable of running on biofuels or ultra-low-sulfur diesel. To cover the $847 million price tag, the average Oʻahu customer will see their monthly electricity bill increase by approximately $3.62. The first phase of the upgrade is expected to be online by 2029.
