Kīlauea Erupts On The Big Island.

While the islands deal with rain, the Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island reminded residents of its power with a significant eruption earlier this week that continues to affect the region today. Fountains of lava reached heights of up to 1,300 feet (400 meters). The eruption blanketed nearby communities in tephra (volcanic glass and ash), with accumulations reaching up to 12 inches in some areas. Volcanic activity temporarily closed Highway 11, and high wind warnings remain in effect for the Big Island summits, where gusts are expected to reach 100 mph today.
