Deep-Sea Dark Oxygen Research.

In a major scientific breakthrough for 2026, researchers operating in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument have successfully mapped the first Dark Oxygen production zones. These are deep-ocean areas where polymetallic nodules on the seafloor act as natural batteries, splitting water molecules to produce oxygen without any sunlight. This discovery has led the state to implement a permanent moratorium on deep-sea mining within its territorial waters, prioritizing the preservation of these unique oxygen-producing ecosystems over mineral extraction.
